The Buccaneers

Based on the Edith Warton novel and currently airing S2, Buccaneers is Apple's answer to Bridgeton. The St. George family from New York marries it's way into London's High Society in the 1870's. American brashness and independence meets British stuffiness and sensibility. Teen soap opera melds modern girls into Victorian London, with lots of romance and drama. Gorgeous set design, costumes and lots of flowers fill the screen and delight the senses, but this was a bit too melodramatic for my taste. The target demographic for this is young women and girls and unfortunately it never quite transcends this. A mostly awful soundtrack doesn't help, but Christina Hendricks and some compelling storylines do. For girls this is a yes, for guys maybe not so much. If I want to see this type of content, stick with anything Jane Austen writes or The Gilded Age on HBO.
